We are a 24 hour search & rescue service to save lives at sea

Story

Thanks for visiting our JustGiving Page!

In 2014 alone, the Leverburgh RNLI Lifeboat crew rescued 14 people and spent over 1340 hours on rescues and training exercises at sea. With 20 volunteer crew and a dedicated fundraising committee the RNLI plays a huge role in the local community. Without these dedicated and selfless people the station just wouldn’t exist and lives would be at risk. Often making sacrifices in their day to day life, they help to make the world a safer place. In return for their dedication the RNLI provides them with the best equipment money can buy, first class training and support.

Our volunteer crews are ordinary people who do extraordinary things. They dedicate their lives to protecting their local community.    24 hours a day, 365 days a year they are ready to answer that call, knowing each time they may have to risk their life to save someone else’s. Leverburgh Lifeboat Station operates ‘Royal Thames’, a 17-knot Mersey class all-weather lifeboat.   With its ability to operate safely in all weathers and to inherently self-right, the Mersey class is ideally suited to working in the varied and treacherous coastlines of Harris, Skye and Uist and into the adjacent Atlantic areas, including St. Kilda.  While the lifeboat gives its crew the confidence to go out in all weathers and return home safely, there is one significant safety improvement we need to make at the lifeboat station itself. That is to have a new pontoon berth built which will allow the crew to be able to reach their lifeboat more safely and quickly, saving precious minutes which could make all the difference between life and death for a casualty at sea.    It will also increase the ease and safety with which disabled casualties can be landed.   A generous donation of £10,000 has already been received, we are launching an appeal to help us raise an additional £50,000 towards the sum necessary to make it happen.

How can you get involved?

Our small community raises about £20,000 per year toward everyday RNLI running costs but the new pontoon berth is an additional necessity.   We know there are a number of Harris exiles, regular visitors and those who have become part of the community by building holiday homes on the island who may wish to support this appeal.  If you wish to help, you can donate directly to Leverburgh Lifeboat Station through our ‘Just Giving’ page or direct to the RNLI. If making your contributions to the RNLI please identify it as for “Leverburgh Pontoon Berth Appeal” to make sure your donation goes directly into the pontoon fund.  If you own a holiday or self-catering establishment on Harris you may wish to tell your clients about our appeal in case they may wish to contribute.

To find out more please contact RNLI Community Support Co-ordinator, Nicola Clifford at: nicola_clifford@rnli.org.uk or 0300 300 9902.  Or  Hamish Taylor, Honorary President (Leverburgh), at: 01859530310 H.Taylor@flodabay.com

It would be great if you could donate and share our Page so we can raise as much as possible to help fund a new fixed pontoon at Leverburgh Lifeboat Station.
